Winter Styling for your home can feel like the time to get out the heavy drapes and extra blankets, while all of the fun brightly coloured items get put away until summer comes around again.
Winter styling doesn’t need to be sombre or heavy though, we think it should be no less bright, with soft furnishings and little décor touches to celebrate in the warmer months.
The idea of winter styling is to fill your living space with things that make you feel comfortable, warm and happy, and that kind of wrap you up in a lovely big embrace when you trudge in after a cold or dreary day.
Here are some of Print Ark’s favourite winter styling tips for 2019 (that we think will last much longer than just one season or one year!)
Winter Styling Tips for Your Home
Wrapped up in Pink
Pink is not just for spring and summer – it totally rocks in winter too. Some of the seasons most popular colours are pink – including Millennial pink Pink which fills Instagram with its warmth, and Living Coral which fits in beautifully in most homes.
Pinks bring a gorgeous romantic vibe to bedrooms, so you might like to add some textured cushions or a luscious throw to your bed, or a vibrant print to your wall, such as this one:
You will feel a wonderfully warm embrace in your home this winter if you fill your space with rich textures and furnishings. Think chunky, hand-knitted rugs, and plush cushions in faux fur or even velvet.
We also love the addition of a furry friend like a cat or dog to snuggle up to, but this might not be easy for all homes to include!
Day Spa Luxury
We love a home that gives you the relaxed and luxurious feel of being in an expensive day spa or the lounge of a five-star hotel.
Decorate with colours that feel calm and soothing such as greys, creams, and mauves, and then add some living plants for fresh air and a scented candle or oil diffuser for ambience.
Build a space that encourages you to slow down and live in the moment, to take a deep breathe and connect with yourself or your family.
Vintage Pieces with a Story
We are seeing a move from the mass-produced pieces from larger department stores to handcrafted or vintage pieces in the home. People love pieces that tell a story, and that are one of a kind, because our homes should be as individual as we are.
Original, one-off pieces need not break the bank to be something special, however, as you will see from the bespoke artworks we sell in our online store. You are certain to find a piece that speaks to you and that carries with it a story you will love to regale to your visitors.
Coastal and beach-inspired décor is not just for the summer, and you can beautifully embrace a winter coastal theme in your home.
Think natural textures such as raw wood, grass or bamboo, pieces that look like they’ve been collected from the sand such as shells and starfish, and relaxed colours such as blues, yellows, and whites.
Moroccan colours and patterns are being celebrated in winter homes this year. You can get this look by adding more permanent pieces like tiling in your bathroom or kitchen, but can also get it with simpler touches like patterned rugs and throws or Moroccan inspired art.
We love the effect of a few vintage-look lanterns scattered around your room, lit with gentle dappled candlelight.
This influence also embraces warmer metal colours like rose gold, bronze and copper as well – look for picture frames, vases and other ways to add a hint of rich yet weathered metal to your space.
Even in winter, we need to conserve our water stores. Indoor plants are always a great touch both aesthetically as well as for your general mood, but you don’t want to have to spend all your time and money keeping them watered.
The trend for plants is still for environmentally conscious options like Australian natives or alternatives like succulents. If you can get the real thing indoors you can add some gorgeous prints to bring that life and greenery to your space like these ones below.
We are seeing the addition of curved edges to every piece of home décor, moving away from harder corners and abrupt ends. Curves are showing up everywhere, from circular mirrors and rugs, to lamps and vases, to edges on countertops, bed-heads and photo frames.
This offers a softer, gentler feel to your space and again fits in with a mindful moment in a calmer sanctuary.
Be confident in your Home Decor
Winter décor, and any home décor really, is whatever you want to make it. Trends in interior design are moving away from generic pieces that look the same as everyone else’s house to personal and individual touches.
You shouldn’t be afraid to show your own flair in your home décor this winter, and throw in what you feel is beautiful and what really makes you happy.
More than anything, in winter your home needs to be welcoming to you, so make it the wonderful space you want to be in.
